Late Minoan Tomb of Fylaki
Late Minoan Tomb of Fylaki

On a hillside site called “Tis tripas t' armi” at a distance of 1 km NW from the village of Fylaki, an important Late Minoan III period tomb dated back to 14th -13th century BC was excavated.

Through a long and narrow downhill corridor we reach a square chamber on top of what a pyramidal roof stands. The corridor and the tomb are carved in the limestone bedrock and its chamber is built with fine worked orthogonal stones. A few stones are missing form the top of the tomb showing that the tomb was looted, while it is estimated that at the same or latter period the entrance headstone was also ruined.

The exact number of tombs in the area is not yet known, although the bones of at least an adult and a child have been recovered. Fire remains along with burnt bovine bones were also found, findings that lead to the conclusion of an animal sacrifice taking place. Inside the tomb a lot of artifacts were recovered which are now exhibited at the Archaeological Museum in Hania.
